Manchester United CEO Ed Woodward ‘had tears in his eyes’ after fan abuse
Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws (h/t Express), former Anderlecht sporting director Michael Verschueren has revealed that Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward had tears in his eyes after receiving fan abuse.
Woodward has been in the role for Manchester United since 2013 following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill. Throughout his time in the position, the Red Devils CEO has been at the receiving end of some harsh words from fans and pundits due to the club’s transfer dealings.
Things came to a peak towards the end of 2019 when fans directed abuses at Woodward and the Glazer family from the stands. His residence was also attacked by some sections of the supporters while he also received plenty of abuse online.
And, Verschueren has now revealed that all the abuse brought Woodward to tears.
“Two years ago, I was accompanied by Ed Woodward, the CEO of Manchester United, who was going through a sporting slump at the time. “He showed me tweets from supporters: ‘Look Michael, how cruel the fans can be’ – the tears were in his eyes.
Having stayed put despite calls of his axing, Woodward, along with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has helped Manchester United turn into title challengers again.
And Verschueren revealed a conversation with Woodward recently when he messaged to congratulate the Man United CEO.
“Today Manchester United are the leader [second] in the Premier League. I messaged Woodward a few days ago to congratulate him. He texted me back saying, ‘You know how tough the journey was’.”

Woodward has had his ups and down during his time at Manchester United. However, that does not justify that abuse that was directed towards him. Having stuck to his role, he has now helped the club turn into challengers again, which is commendable.
