Newcastle United leading the race to take Manchester United starlet Brandon Williams on loan
According to the Shields Gazette (h/t Mirror), Newcastle United are leading the race to land Manchester United starlet Brandon Williams on loan.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakout season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019/20. He has, however, played a more peripheral role this time around, making just one Premier League appearance.
With Alex Telles and Luke Shaw firmly established as the club’s top choices at left-back, Williams may need to leave to garner more game time.
His situation has attracted attention from both Southampton and Newcastle United heading into the January transfer window.
As things stand, Newcastle appear to have stolen a march over the Saints. The Magpies are also understood to have agreed on a deal in principle to loan Williams until the end of the season.
With the Magpies targetting loan deals and United willing to let Williams leave, there is the possibility that a deal could be agreed on. With more than three weeks to go in the January window, there is plenty of time for a deal to be worked upon.
Williams, despite his young age, has enjoyed considerable first-team action under Solskjaer. However, as seen last season, he does tend to struggle when coming up against tough opposition.
It is clear that he needs to be playing regularly to learn and continue his development. Spending time on the bench or in the Under-23s will do little to help his growth.
With Jamal Lewis struggling to settle in at Newcastle, Williams has an opportunity to ensure he can make the position his own for the remainder of the season.
