Manchester United ready to sell four players in January
Responding to a fan during a Q&A, The Athletic’s Laurie Whitehall has claimed that Manchester United are prepared to let go of four players in the January transfer window.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stressed the importance having adequate squad depth so that he can rotate his players effectively. However, it seems like the Norwegian is preparing to axe as many as four players from his roster this month.
The first player who is believed to be on his way out his goalkeeper Sergio Romero. The Argentine has fallen behind Dean Henderson in the pecking order this term and was left out of our 25-man Premier League squad for the season.
Recent reports have claimed that he is a target for fellow Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion.
Next on the chopping block is defender Marcos Rojo. Another player who does not feature in the manager’s plans, the centre-back hasn’t featured at all this term and is expected to be on his way out.
Fellow defender Phil Jones, too, will be allowed to leave by Manchester United this term. Much like Rojo, Jones, too, isn’t part of Ole’s plans and hasn’t played a game since early 2020. Currently recovering from an injury, the Englishman is expected to depart Old Trafford this winter.
And, the final player that will be shown the doors by United is Jesse Lingard. Manchester United triggered a one-year extension option in his contract just this week. However, that was more likely to done to protect his value rather than keep him at the club.

Lingard is behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Juan Mata in the pecking order. The Englishman’s future seems to lie away from Old Trafford as things stand.
It will be interesting to see if United do follow through and let these players leave this month. At the same time, it remains to be seen if there are any new incomings as well.
