United keeping tabs on this three-time Champions League-winning star who is out of contract next summer

Manchester United are interested in Real Madrid star Lucas Vasquez

According to Spanish site Fichajes.net (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are interested in securing Real Madrid star Lucas Vasquez in the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old has spent the majority of his career at the Santiago Bernebeu, the exception being one season away on loan at Espanyol. During this time, he has been a part of multiple title-winning Madrid sides.

With his contract up next summer, United could sign Vazquez for a knockdown price in January. Real meanwhile are not keen to lose the player on a free transfer.

A right-winger, Vazquez has been deployed as a right-back this season with mixed results. According to the report, that is exactly where United seek to use him.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back is the undisputed first choice in his position at the club. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bring in Vazquez as a backup for the English star.

While Wan-Bissaka is defensively solid, his attacking output leaves much to be desired. Vazquez is a better prospect going forward, owing to him playing predominantly as a winger.

United were keen to bring in a right-winger last summer. However, our interest in Jadon Sancho and other alternatives fell flat.

While Vasquez can serve as a dynamic backup for Wan-Bissaka, he can also be deployed higher up on the wing if needed. This can help us bridge one weakness, even if it is a temporary measure.

Better options available?

The report goes on to add that United are preparing a bid worth £14million for the Spaniard’s services. The player is a favourite of Real manager Zinedine Zidane, who may not be in favour of selling him.

Vasquez has never played outside his native country and may not be able to impress right off the bat. Given that he is already 29, United wiill be better off using the money to bringing a better prospect.

La Liga appears to be a favoured destination for United in their right-back hunt. Another player who has been linked with a potential switch is Vasquez’s cross-city rival Kieran Trippier. (h/t The Telegraph)

Of the two players, Trippier would be a better alternative given his prior experience in the Premier League. Moreover, his prowess on the dead ball is an added bonus.
