Manchester United given a boost in their pursuit of Dayot Upamecano
According to German publication Bild (h/t The Mirror), Manchester United have been given a boost in the race to sign Dayot Upamecano.
The young Frenchman is among the best young centre-backs on the continent. He has emerged into a colossus at the back for RB Leipzig and has even featured for world champions France.
With Bayern Munich now are out of contention to sign the defender. The European champions are in no position to afford the 22-year-old.
In a crisis, there could be an opportunity
Liverpool are still in the race and could prove to be dogged contenders. Jurgen Klopp’s side have lost Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez potentially for the season, necessitating them to dip into the January market.
In Upamecano, they would not just get a player who can solidify their backline but also one for the future. Upamecano has a release clause worth £40million that is not expected to come into effect until the summer.
However, Leipzig could make a decision on Upamecano’s future in January and may let him go early, provided his release clause is met. Liverpool have shown themselves to be mavericks in the transfer window and we will have to take the initiative to ensure we don’t miss out.
Money talks?
Another major aspect that may affect our ability to spend is the dire financial condition of the club.
According to an analysis by Vysyble (h/t The Daily Mail), the coronavirus pandemic is projected to see the club take a hit of nearly £191.5million in losses for the 2020/21 campaign.
With the recent financials showing revenue down by an overall £109m, what effect it has on our transfer plans remains to be seen.
