Manchester United fans react to the on-field incident between Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes against Chelsea
Manchester United fans are divided in their opinion regarding an on-field incident between Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes yesterday night.
United took on Chelsea in the standout fixture of the weekend in the English Premier League. With just 11 minutes to go, United were in possession of the ball and were in search of a winner.
Fernandes took possession on the left flank and was immediately closed down by two Chelsea players. He indicated Shaw to overlap on the flank and open up the angle for a cross.
The left-back however refused, much to Fernandes’ frustration. Fans were quick to notice the incident and took to Twitter to react to it.
While some blamed the defender for not taking the opportunity, others defended him for not abandoning his post.
While Fernandes’ attempt to go for a win is admirable, had United lost the ball with Shaw out of position, we would have been privy to a Chelsea counterattack.
As a defender, Shaw has to have a safety-first approach, and his decision to disagree with his teammate is not without reason.
Rather than be frustrated and kick the ball away to another teammate, Fernandes should have instead kept his cool. Despite not overlapping, Shaw had enough space to make the cross had the ball been passed to him.
We take a look at how some of the fans reacted.
Twitter reacts to Shaw- Fernandes disagreement
If shaw goes Kante covers him and Shaw will be out of position for the counter, he’s in a perfect position to cross there if Bruno passes 🤷🏻♂️ Shaw is just a scapegoat

Shaw is a frustrating player to watch. Half arsed crossing, lazy/unfit looking at times and if you want to guarantee any fast paced move stalls or slows down
give it up him— Why I Outta.. (@antwright21) October 25, 2020
Well,I don’t blame him for not overlapping. He’s aware of how pacy C’s players were and how quick our Captain is. He’s playing safe.

United lose the ball and he’s wide left they are completely exposed, he did the right thing

Is Bruno serious? Shaw is 30 yards away. How much time does he think he has 😂

Fernandes actually having to tell Shaw to overlap.

Luke Shaw just standing there as Bruno Fernandes orders him countless times to overlap Marcus Rashford or Bruno himself. Annoying thing is Shaw has the ability to do so but he chooses not to. Can’t see us progressing as a team with weak links 🥶

Fernandes trying to get shaw to go outside him to take a defender away and he just stands there 😂

Shaw did what any sensible FB would have done. Overlapping with 10 minutes remaining and the game tied is risking a point against a top 6 team, which at this stage in the season a point is not a terrible result.

Its lazy, that run opens up space. Shaw makes that run and either gets the ball to cross it or cut in or Bruno can cut inside himself because the defender is dragged away.
