Manchester United star Alex Telles compared to Liverpool duo
Speaking to the Webby and O’Neil podcast (h/t The Express), Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has compared Alex Telles to the best full-backs in the league.
Unfortunately, the two best players in the position play for our arch-rivals Liverpool. Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have time and again shown that they are arguably the best full-back pairing in the league.
“You look at Trent, Robertson, the goals they provide. Now, full-backs have to have that in their armour.”
While Telles is the new player on the block, he showcased his crossing ability in the 2-1 win away to PSG. He time and again caused problems for the Parisian defence with his dangerous crosses and incisive movement.
Playing his first game for the club, Telles was a dominant force down the left flank. In fact, he was a massive upgrade on Luke Shaw, who was used as a centre-back.
“With Telles, that’s something we’ve been missing.”
Giggs believes the Brazilian ace has shown United can now utilize him as an offensive threat from the left-back position. This is in stark contrast to both Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka who aren’t much of a threat going forward.
The modern-day full-back
To be fair to our rivals, Trent and Robertson have reinvented the role of full-backs in the modern game. They are such an integral part of the Liverpool team that their impact on the field is seen in almost every game.
Gone are the days of out and out wingers hogging the byline. Now they function as inside forwards, while the width is provided by the fullbacks.
“They have to be like that, if the wingers are coming in, the full-backs have to create the width and make goals.”
In Telles, we have just that. A player who can contribute massively to the attack, while also remaining solid defensively.

Telles has shown he has what it takes to be the trump card in our arsenal. If his performance against PSG is anything to go by, he will fit in well at United.
With Chelsea up next, it remains to be seen if he can continue his early promise.
