The veteran defender is keen to return to Roma after impressing on loan last season. He established himself as one of the league’s finest defenders during his stint in Serie A.

Despite both the player and Roma keen to make the deal permanent, United have refused to budge on their asking price for the player.

The player’s entourage also remains ready to move once a deal is accepted. As reported by the Daily Mail, Smalling’s agent James Featherstone has put a private plane on standby to fly out to Italy at short notice.

According to the report, AC Milan could make a move for Smalling if they miss out on Chelsea ace Antonio Rudiger.
