Roma sweating in bid to sign Manchester United star Chris Smalling
According to Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness (h/t The Mirror), Serie A giants Roma believe a deal for Manchester United star Chris Smalling is difficult.
The central defender spent last season on loan at the Stadio Olimpico. He enjoyed a fine season and was among the best defenders in the league.
Given his performances, it is no surprise Roma want him back on a permanent basis. Smalling too is in favour of a move. (h/t Daily Mail)
However, they are yet to make an offer that is to United’s liking. The Red Devils want £18m for the player and are waiting for Roma to return with an improved offer.
The Italians however have other ideas. According to the report, the Giallorossi will return with a €15m bid for the player after paying €3m to take him on loan last season.
It will see the 30-year-old join once more on a loan with an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.
Roma boss Paulo Fonseca remains keen to bring in Chris Smalling on a permanent basis. However, he is aware that the finances involved are proving to be a concern.
Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan are also keeping tabs on Smalling. While Roma are still the favourites to land him, their financial situation could give the Nerrazzuri a chance to pounce.
Inter took Alexis Sanchez off our hands this summer. It remains to be seen if they do the same for Smalling as well.
