Man United rising star’s starting spot in doubt after off-field fiasco

Mason Greenwood is playing with fire

Mason Greenwood could lose his spot in the Manchester United XI

According to The Sun, Mason Greenwood could lose his position in the Manchester United starting XI.

The youngster made the news for all the wrong reasons during his time away with the England national team. Greenwood and Phil Foden were sent back home for meeting up with two girls in the team hotel, breaking Covid-19 protocols.

The 18-year-old also got a stern telling off by United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. With the season opener nearing, it remains to be seen if he is still in his manager’s good books.

The youngster enjoyed a fine breakout season at United last campaign. He formed a terrifying triumvirate alongside Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Greenwood scored 17 goals and assisted five and was selected in the English squad for the first time. He went on to make his senior debut against Iceland in a 1-0 win. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Unfortunately, that special week will now be remembered for all the wrong reasons. According to the report, Greenwood has been given no assurances that his club place is safe.

The onus now falls on Solskjaer to determine whether the youngster has learned his lesson.

He admitted that his decision has broken the faith shown in him by Gareth Southgate. Greenwood has vowed to learn from it and never let down his family, teammates or country again.

Hopefully, the lesson is now learned and he will come out of this a better man. With focus set to turn onto the pitch, it is time for Greenwood to show that he is a better player and a man than what he was before.
