Man United could sign veteran World Cup winner to bolster midfield ranks

Manchester United interested in German star Sami Khedira

According to Goal (h/t The Express), Manchester United are keeping tabs on Juventus star Sami Khedira who could be available on a free.

The 33-year-old played a key role in Germany’s World Cup triumph in 2014. A solid player for both Real Madrid and Juventus, he has been one of the best defensive midfielders in world football.

Juventus are on the verge of cancelling his contract, which will make him a free agent. Once this happens, United can bring in Khedira to bolster their midfield.

The German is coming on the back of an injury-hit campaign that saw him make just 18 appearances all season.

Khedira was forced to undergo knee surgery last December. His misfortune did not end there as a tear in the abductor muscle ended his season after the winter break.

The Italian champions are keen to free up their wage bill with Khedira one of the players to make way. Releasing him will see them free up £5.5m in wages.

While Khedira is an excellent player, it appears that his best days are behind him. Signing the German is reminiscent of our capture of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The former United star arrived at Old Trafford with a burgeoning reputation, but he was well past his best. he failed to make an impact and struggled whenever called upon.

The club will do well to not repeat the same mistake again.

Having signed Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek in successive windows, United have a number of options in midfield.

Khedira’s lack of pace and worrisome injury records are factors the club should not ignore. It is debatable what exactly he would add to our squad.

United are better off focussing their interests elsewhere.
