Tottenham Hotspur set to trump Manchester United to Gareth Bale

According to The Athletic, Gareth Bale looks set to return to the Premier League seven years after leaving for Real Madrid, but it isn’t to Manchester United.

The 31-year-old is surplus to requirements at the Santiago Bernabeu and does not have the backing of manager Zinedine Zidane.

In fact, the Welshman has been training alone since the Real squad returned to training. With a return to English shores nearing, he will not have to worry about being on the sidelines for another season.

A major detriment for potential suitors was his mammoth £500,000-a-week wages. But with Real ready to foot half of that, interested parties have some breathing space to work out a loan deal. (h/t The Express)

United were one of them, having identified the winger as an alternative to Jadon Sancho. A player with proven pedigree in the Premier League, he could have been a shrewd signing.

In fact, it is United’s view of him as an alternative that has worked against them in the efforts to sign him.

Bale is unhappy at being the second choice and is keen to return to Spurs, whose efforts to secure him are to his liking.

The player’s agent Jonathan Barnett has confirmed his client is “close” to completing a return to North London. Bale established himself as a star at White Hart Lane before making the move to Real in 2013. (h/t The Express)

It would appear that we have yet again lost out on a player we were keen on. As of now, Dutch star Donny van de Beek remains United’s lone major capture of the window.

Having finished third last season, United were expected to push on and build upon the return of Champions League football.

So far, the response has been abysmal and with the window nearing its end, something will have to be done sooner than later.
