Aston Villa face a major hurdle in their efforts to land Manchester United star Sergio Romero
According to the Athletic (h/t Daily Star), Aston Villa are interested in Manchester United star Sergio Romero.
The 33-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at United. A dependable understudy to David de Gea, he has proven his mettle since when called upon.
Villa are keen to bring in a new keeper to replace Pepe Reina, who left for Lazio earlier this summer.
Dean Smith has identified the Argentine shot-stopper as the perfect replacement for their former Spanish star. Given the goalkeeping situation at United, he also has enough encouragement to make a move for Romero.
With Dean Henderson back at the club and armed with a new contract, Romero will in all likelihood be the third choice goalkeeper next season.
Despite impressing in the cups, Romero was dropped in favour of De Gea as United went deeper in the competitions. This has led to the veteran star’s displeasure.
Villa for their part are keen to use the incident to their advantage. However, they face a major hurdle in their efforts to match Romero’s salary at United.
The Argentine earns £70,000 per week at United. Meeting the amount will make Romero the highest-paid player at Villa Park. To put things into perspective, he currently earns twice as that of Villa skipper Jack Grealish.
Despite his brilliance, signing Romero will be a sizable investment from Villa. Whether doing so will have a domino effect on the rest of their players remains to be seen.
