“This is a dream come true. Our local village is very proud. It’s the perfect moment for him to make this step to such a beautiful club.”

A product of the Ajax academy, Van de Beek became a first-team regular for the club in 2017/18. But it was the 2018/19 season that firmly put him on the map across Europe. The midfielder played an integral role in Ajax’s magical run to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Capable of playing a multitude of roles in the middle of the park, Van de Beek should provide added quality and depth. His signing would certainly alleviate some of the pressure on Bruno Fernandes to be the creative force of the side, while the Dutchman can contribute with goals himself.

With Van de Beek’s deal all but done, the club needs to carry this momentum and make a few more additions before the season kicks off.

Nemanja Matic could do with some backup in the defensive midfield role.
