Nemanja Matic urges Manchester United to show Premier League title credentials

Speaking to MUTV (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has urged the club to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The Red Devils have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013. With a seven-year drought ongoing, Matic believes the club has no excuses but to challenge again.

“My personal target is to win the league with United and I am sure that everyone wants to do the same.”

United endured a mixed bag in the first half of last season. They flirted with the idea of breaking into the top four only to struggle in the lower top half.

To their credit, the team came alive in the second half of the campaign and ended up finishing third. With Champions League football back on the table, United have a solid foundation to build on.

Matic believes that rivals saw the real United post lockdown. United finally found a settled XI as they romped home with six wins and three draws.

“What we have done after [the coronavirus lockdown] when we started to play again. That’s Manchester United.”

With the improvement shown, Matic believes the club should kick on and challenge for the top prize next season.

Matic too experienced an upsurge in form that coincided with United’s. This saw him get awarded with a new deal that would keep him at the club until 2023.

While the club does have a solid starting XI, it is strength in depth that we lack. It came to the fore towards the end of last season as our key players struggled with fatigue.

Although we agree with Matic’s sentiments, United will need to dip into the transfer market to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a title-winning squad.

At this moment in time, we are behind Liverpool and Manchester City. With Chelsea also strengthening considerably, we also risk the chance of them overtaking us.

United have until now endured a window to forget. There seems to be hope now as the club seems to be stirring into life.

The Red Devils have already agreed on a deal for Ajax Amsterdam star Donny van de Beek. The club are also confident of landing RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano.
