Harry Maguire set for showdown talks following Greek fracas
According to the Mirror, Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire will take part in showdown talks with Gareth Southgate.
The England boss is set to announce his 27-man squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Iceland.
Maguire could have been expected to have made the cut had it not been for his arrest in the Greek island of Mykonos. However, with Southgate keeping a special emphasis on the conduct of his players, Maguire’s current standing is uncertain.
The defender’s hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, the same day Southgate announced his squad. The fixtures will be held in Reykjavic on 5th August and Copenhagen on 8th August.
Although Maguire has pleaded not guilty and denied the charges, doubts regarding his mindset exist. Southgate will select from both the Manchester clubs despite the players enjoying an extended season owing to European commitments.
Despite the England boss’ understanding of the players’ need for rest, he is expected to field his strongest team in the competition.
The Three Lions made it all the way to the semifinals of the competition in 2019. They eventually finished third behind champions Portugal and runners up, The Netherlands.
One cannot fault Southgate if he does not pick the United skipper in his squad. Given the role footballers play as role models and as a captain of one of the biggest teams in the world, Maguire should have known better.
Although the real circumstances behind the brawl remain unconfirmed, Maguire currently has little going in his favour regarding perception.
