According to The Guardian, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes his side failed to take their chances against Sevilla.
The Red Devils’ Europa League run came to a grinding halt against the Spaniards yesterday night. Bruno Fernandes put United up early on after Marcus Rashford won his side a penalty.
Despite moments of laying siege to the Sevilla goal, United could not find a way past a determined Spanish defence.
“I think if we had taken our chances we would have won the game but that is not always how football works.”
Solskajer’s assertion of fatigue is particularly enlightening. The Red Devils put up one excellent performance after another since the restart. However, the team has looked tired and worn out in their last few games.
With the Norwegian putting off substitutions until the last minutes, it cannot be said he helped matters much either.
“It’s been a long season and we need a break now.”
Time and squad management the key
With rest and recuperation the priority, it is unlikely that United will get much of it. The Premier League season is set to begin on September 12.
With barely a month left, United will have to balance rest while also going ahead with their pre-season preparations. Solskajer will have to focus on bringing in the right players this summer and not necessarily marquee signings.
