Speaking after the game, Fernandes stressed on the importance of taking collective responsibility for what goes on the pitch.

The midfielder refused to make a meal of the incident and believes it was nothing out of the ordinary. Fernandes also stressed that it was just an example of the teammates looking out for each other.

The loss brings to an end a promising season that could have been so much more. United made it to the semifinals of all three cup competitions but could go no further.

Although Champions League football is back on the table, the lack of a trophy is telling. In fact, this is the club’s third straight season sans silverware. This is the first time United have had to experience it in the last 31 years.

It is something Fernandes is keen on setting right. He admitted that he needs to do more and has stressed on the importance of winning trophies.

“It is not enough, I need to do much more.”

It was a disappointing night for a number of players who have stepped up in recent weeks. Winning the trophy would have been the perfect way to end a promising season.

Unfortunately, it was not to be. United should now learn the lessons and ensure the lessons learned are not in vain.
