Manchester United stars down after Sevilla defeat
According to BT Sport (h/t MEN), Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire has revealed that the players are devastated following the Europa League semifinal loss to Sevilla.
The loss was United’s third setback at the semifinal stage of a major competition this season. The Red Devils had earlier succumbed in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
The night started off well for the Red Devils who took an early lead courtesy of a Bruno Fernandes penalty. Although we continued to create a fair bit, poor conversion kept us from stamping our authority on the clash.
“The boys are devastated in there. We created numerous amounts of chances but we’ve got to win the game.”
Maguire picked up on his side’s profligacy in front of goal. This was especially noticeable in the early stages of the second half.
United came out all guns blazing and were denied time and again from regaining the lead. Ultimately, it can be said that Sevilla took their chances while we didn’t.
“They punished us for missing chances. We’ve been ruthless at times this year but today we weren’t.”
The United skipper has no illusions as to who were the better team on the night. Maguire believes his team outperformed their rivals but fell prey to two lapses in judgments.
“We deserved to win the game and deserved to go through but we ultimately fell short at a semi-final for the third time. It’s disappointing.”
This is the third season in a row that United have finished without winning a trophy. The last time this happened was during the 1987-89 seasons.

With the Premier League season set to commence in less than a month, United do not have time to dwell on what could have been.
The Red Devils will have to take the lessons and move on. A new beginning comes with new opportunities and it is up to the team to ensure they make the most of it.
