Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urges Ed Woodward to splash the cash
As reported by the Mirror, Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the club has to spend in order to compete against Liverpool and Manchester City.
Despite finishing in the top four, the Red Devils found themselves a mammoth 33 points from the top of the table. With our two biggest rivals operating at a higher level, United will need investment to close the gap on them.
The reality of the situation is not lost on Solskjaer. The Norwegian has been allowed to spend almost £200m on his squad in the last few windows.
United have brought in the likes of Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Bruno Fernandes, and Daniel James. The former three have all been worth their weight in gold.
However, it is still not enough. Having ensured Champions League qualification, Solskjaer believes the club is once again an attractive proposition for players. (h/t Mirror)
“Champions League makes us more sporting and financially attractive.”
Bringing in players will cost money, especially when they are better than those already at the club. A club such as United cannot compromise on quality. But then that also means paying top dollar for our targets. (h/t Mirror)
“You need to plan ahead. It is definitely about quality – and it is going to cost money to get in players who are better than the ones we already have.”
United not only need to add quality but also quantity. With Champions League commitments to come, strength in depth could be a decisive factor as we compete on multiple fronts.
The Red Devils have done well to qualify do the semifinals this season. Solskjaer is keen to go the extra step and believes the time has come for United to win silverware again. (h/t Mirror)
“We are always working towards having a competitive squad and the challenge for us now is to take the next step.”
United are far from the finished article. While we continue looking up to the teams above us, we must not lose track of those behind us.
Chelsea who finished fourth are in the midst of an aggressive recruitment campaign. The Blues have already recruited Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner and are far from done this summer.
United cannot afford to stand still. Not in a competitive setup such as the Premier League. Woodward will do well to heed his manager’s advice.
