Graeme Suness believes Manchester United should make a move for Lionel Messi
Writing for The Times, Graeme Souness has urged Manchester United to make a move for Barcelona great Lionel Messi.
The 33-year-old is coming off an 8-2 humiliation against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. In fact, it is just the second time in his career that the Argentine has ended a season without a trophy.
With the Catalans set to undergo a rebuild, Souness believes there is no better time than now to make an overture to sign the forward. (h/t The Times)
Messi has just a year left on his Barcelona contract. With a host of changes expected to be made for both the playing staff and the management, it remains to be seen if Messi is willing to stick around.
Unlike Barcelona, Untied are a young team on the rise. Despite being some way away from the top, the Red Devils appear to be on the right track to success.
“This would be the perfect week to put a bid in for the 33-year-old Argentinian and I could easily see him playing in Manchester — at either United or City.”
Manchester City however do hold an advantage over us if we decide to go head to head for the Argentine. Apart from the presence of Pep Guardiola, City are also better placed than us to challenge for top honours.
More trouble than it is worth!
Despite his advanced age Messi still remains a daunting proposition for defenders to face. United will however do well to steer clear of him.
The Red Devils at this point in time have a plan where young hungry players have been given the platform to perform. Adding someone of Messi’s stature will bring about the need to tweak the system to suit him.
Add to it his high salary, the Red Devils could be taking the road they took with Alexis Sanchez.

Signing Messi would be a dream come true for many fans. But at 33, the Argentine is fast nearing the end of his career.
Spending oodles of money on a short-term prospect is detrimental to the club’s future. United are better off investing elsewhere. We rather the club has the best team over the best player.
