Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to bring in a new striker and a defender
According to the Telegraph, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to focus on two key positions this summer.
Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho has long been linked to a move. Solskjaer is keen to supplement this move with two more of his own.
According to the report, he wants to sign a striker and a centre-back with Ed Woodward set to back him.
United’s front three of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, and Mason Greenwood have all enjoyed excellent seasons. The trio has gone on and stepped it up a level since the restart.
Despite this Solskjaer is seeking an experienced forward who can help both Rashford and Greenwood continue their development.
There is no doubting our young duo’s skills but we cannot afford to burn them out quickly. A lesson can be learned by looking at the examples of Robbie Fowler and Micheal Owen. Both prodigious strikers, they were in decline even before they could reach their peaks.
United do have Odion Ighalo as an able deputy. The Nigerian’s contract runs out next January and we will have to plan ahead.
We were able to sign the former Watford ace at the last moment in the winter window. He has worked out a peach. But we cannot afford to be unprepared for when he leaves.
Another area of concern is at centre-back. Harry Maguire has brought in leadership and quality to our backline but lacks a suitable partner who can complement him.
The likes of Victor Lindelof have improved but do not instill confidence due to his penchant for making errors. A solid backline can give us the foundation to building a strong spine. And it is good to see Solskjaer take cognizance of the situation.
