According to the MEN, Dean Henderson will only pen an extension with Manchester United if he is promised the number one spot.

The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Sheffield United. He has enjoyed a fine season as the Blades mount an unlikely push for continental football.

His tenure at Bramall Lane ends this summer, leaving United with a decision to make. Henderson has emerged as a target for Chelsea who are keen to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga.

According to the report, he does not expect United to sell him. This amidst the possibility that he is made the first-choice goalkeeper next season.

The position is currently held by Spanish international David de Gea. The 29-year-old has been at United for almost a decade and has done justice to the United shirt.

However, the Spaniard’s star is on the wane following a number of errors over the past few months. He also committed one over the weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.

Fans are divided over the prospect, with many criticizing Henderson’s performances in Sheffield’s 3-0 loss to Newcastle United.

He will be looking to play regularly given that the England spot could be available for grabs for next year’s Euros.

Henderson has emerged as one of the best keepers in the Premier League at Sheffield. He has made 32 appearances for the Blades and has conceded just 27 goals. He is also leading the race for the golden glove with 11 shutouts. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already insisted that Henderson will become the United number one in the future.

However, the club finalized a four-year deal with David de Gea in September and Sergio Romero’s contract is not up until next year. (h/t MEN)

It will be interesting to see how United handle this. De Gea has been a loyal servant to the club but Henderson is the future. The Red Devils will need to maintain a fine balancing act here.
