Marcus Rashford helps supply over two million weekly meals to the needy
According to the Evening Standard, Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford leads the line not just on the pitch, but off it as well.
The 22-year-old launched his charity in partnership with Fareshare around six weeks ago. It has now been revealed that the initiative is supplying over two million meals a week to those in need across the country. Rashford is also set to double his initial personal donation to the cause (h/t Evening Standard).
The importance of this gesture will not be lost on the player who was once himself reliant on free school meals when growing up.
With around 32,000 schools closed across the nation due to the coronavirus pandemic, the striker took it upon himself to raise the necessary £100,000 and feed 400,000 children (h/t Evening Standard).
Response to the initiative has surpassed the amount by a considerable margin. As of now around £20m has been collected following the backing of a number of major supermarkets (h/t Evening Standard).
Rashford went on to reveal the difficulties his mother had in ensuring that her son had at least a meal a day. Had it not been for breakfast club and free school meals, he would not have had any food until late at night (h/t Evening Standard).
The striker acknowledged that there are kids who are worse off before revealing his intention to double his contribution. He also went on to thank everyone who has contributed to the cause. Every penny matters (h/t Evening Standard).
