Manchester United face Chelsea test to sign Bundesliga star Kai Havertz

According to The Athletic, Chelsea are set to battle Manchester United for Bayer Leverkusen ace Kai Havertz. The Blues view the German as a perfect alternative to Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho.

Frank Lampard is keen to add more creativity to his side, having already spent £33million on Ajax Amsterdam star Hakim Ziyech.

Havertz, who came through the academy at Leverkusen is an important member of the club’s setup.

He has scored six goals and created five assists in the Bundesliga this season and has also impressed in the Europa League, with three goals and two assists in just three games.

Havertz is also younger than the Brazilian and will be a long-term prospect. Alongside Bruno Fernandes, he could be the perfect foil in the United midfield.

The 20-year-old is the second Bundesliga star to be contested by the two rivals, the other being Dortmund sensation Jadon Sancho. Havertz has also lent credibility to his potential departure by stating that he is ready to take the next step in his career.

“I want to take the next step in my career at some point. That’s my ambition.”

Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz has already admitted previously that the club would find it hard to keep hold of the midfielder in the summer transfer window (h/t Daily Star).

The midfielder has also made seven appearances for the German national side, scoring one goal. He also won the Fritz Walter Medal on his way to being included in the Bundesliga team of the year in 2018-19.
