Manchester United to offer Saul Niguez around £200,000-a-week
According to the Sun (h/t Mirror), Manchester United are set to offer Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez a contract worth £200,000-a-week in order to tempt him to make the switch to Old Trafford.
The Spanish ace has emerged as our top transfer priority this summer, especially given the uncertainty surrounding Paul Pogba.
The Red Devils have scouted the 25-year-old a number of times in the recent past. A particular highlight was his performance in Atletico’s famous 3-2 win at Anfield.
Niguez scored the winner in the first leg before helping his side flip a 2-0 deficit into a 3-1 win in the second leg.
United’s package will more than double Niguez’s current pay cheque at the Wanda Metropolitano. It was reported by the Sun that the player currently earns £85,000-per-week and has a hefty £132million buyout clause.
Niguez came through the youth system at Atletico after switching over from arch-rivals Real Madrid in 2008. He signed a nine-year extension in 2017 and has six years left on his contract.
Making the best of a bad situation
The coronavirus pandemic has dried up revenue streams in football. A number of clubs are expected to be frugal in the market.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to take advantage of the situation in order to accelerate our rise back to the top. (h/t Express)
The Red Devils have been smart in recent windows and have used their cash wisely to improve key positions. Aaron Wan Bissaka and Harry Maguire brought much-needed defensive solidity while Bruno Fernandes added life to a midfield that had gone dour.
The addition of the relentless Niguez will be a perfect foil to Fernandes’ abilities. The Spaniard is an engine in the middle of the park and will be well worth the price.
If anything, his heroics against Liverpool will make him a fan favourite upon arrival.
