Man United to choose Jack Grealish transfer over James Maddison
According to the Athletic (h/t Standard), Manchester United will prioritize the signing of Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish over Leicester playmaker James Maddison.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward are both fans of the English midfielder and believe he is an attainable target.
In spite of having a personally memorable season, Grealish’s Villa side is in the thick of a relegation dogfight. The Villans are currently 19th, with a game in hand over the teams above them.
In contrast, James Maddison plays for a high flying Leicester side. They sit comfortably in third place, with Champions League football next season a real possibility.
With a seat in Europe’s top competition, Leicester will have less incentive to sell their playmaker when compared to Villa. (h/t Standard)
The Foxes could demand as much as £100million for Maddison. This could affect our moves for other targets such as Jadon Sancho and Harry Kane.
Grealish has netted seven goals and six assists in the Premier League this season, while Maddison has scored six and assisted three. The choice to go for the Villa captain makes sense.
There is no doubting Maddison’s quality. He still has a long way to go and could become a leading Premier League midfielder in the future.
But for now, the price quoted is far too expensive and United will do better to go for Grealish. The fact that the player has had a rougher time than Maddison and yet keeps stepping up for his club should work in his favour.
A solid spine!
The addition of Bruno Fernandes in January was an astute move by United. The Portuguese star was the captain at Sporting Lisbon and brought his much-needed leadership abilities to the United midfield.
The addition of Grealish will further augment our squad with players capable of stepping up when needed.
