Where Can Jose Mourinho Can Use This All-Round Player At Manchester United?

Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney’s future has been subject to a lot of debate over the last couple of years, and even United’s managers have not been able to pin down a particular spot for him in the squad. David Moyes and Louis van Gaal have both used him in a wide array of positions, ranging from central midfield to a striker. While the Englishman has been more or less successful in all over the park, yet I personally believe he needs to be utilised in one specific position in order to get the best out of him. At 30 years of age, he does not possess the pace he once did, but his intelligence and game reading skills could make him the kind of player around whom you can build a team.

How does he fit into Jose’s plans?

Well Mourinho has a tendency to build his team around one specific player, it was Didier Drogba and Eden Hazard during his two spells at Chelsea, Wesley Sneijder at Inter Milan and Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid. At Manchester United, I believe he can do the same with Rooney in charge, placing the former Evertonian at the false no. 9 role, just behind the centre forward.

This will give him the license to drag players out of position, create space for the overlapping fullbacks or just rumble in the box with his strength and score. Wayne is just 5 goals shy of breaking Sir Bobby’s record goal haul for the Red Devils, and it is certain that putting him in that attacking midfield role will give him the room to score and set up more, using his skill and vision.

The future:

Wayne Rooney is United’s captain now, and has the led the club to a first FA Cup triumph in 12 years. He will be hoping that he can continue winning and leading the team in the days to come, and that will and determination will be an added incentive for the Portugese manager. He may be a Scouser, but Wayne is a true Mancunian at heart and could take a bullet for the team if he needed to, and there is no bigger passion than that for a manager.
