Manchester United v Norwich: 3 Key Battles That Might Decide The Game

Having failed to win a single match in their last 5 games, Manchester United will be eager to register a win over a struggling Norwich side as they take on the Canaries at Old Trafford on Saturday. Here we see 3 key battles that could decide the game:

1. Michael Carrick v Wes Hoolahan

Michael Carrick has been a mainstay in the United midfield for a long period now, his precise passing and cool head are just some of the attributes that have seen him win many honours during his time at Old Trafford. The 34 year old isn’t known for his play further up the field but instead will sit in front of the injury riddled defence and try to dictate the game. He will have his hands full though trying to contain Wes Hoolahan, Norwich’s attacking midfielder who likes going at players and has 2 goals and 5 assists so far this season.

2. Guillermo Varela v Robbie Brady

Given the fact that both Valencia and Darmian are still out injured, the Uruguayan Varela will be expected to start again today, and the inexperienced 22 year old will have to be on top of his game if he has to contain the former United youth team player Robbie Brady. The Irish international loves to cut out and cross and despite having only 1 goal and 1 assist to his name, he still poses a healthy threat.

3. Maroune Fellaini v Rusell Martin

The Belgian’s presence will be the key, should United end their current run of bad form on Saturday. The former Evertonian scored in United’s last game and also caused a lot of problems in Bournemouth’s box. His physical presence is necessary if United need to go for the long ball tactic. Hoping to snuff out Fellaini will be the Canaries centre back Russell Martin. Martin is useful in both boxes, having three goals to his name this season, not bad for a defender. Fellaini will be looking to come out on top in this battle between the two men, who both stand over six feet tall.
