Christian Eriksen admits Manchester United were not good enough against Crystal Palace
Manchester United star Christian Eriksen has given a brutal assessment of the Red Devils’ performance in the stunning 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Erik ten Hag’s men looked rudderless in what was an agonizingly abject display that leaves no room foe debate. The Red Devils were second best for the entirety of the game and can even count themselves lucky that Palace failed to score more.
In what is becoming a trend these days, United appear to be doing their talking off the field than on it. With Arsenal up next, it is difficult to see what exactly we can offer against Mikel Arteta’s men this coming weekend.
Eriksen played the entire 90 minutes of the game and was hardly any better than his teammates. Speaking to the BBC (h/t The Mirror), the Danish international admitted that it was a disappointing display while pointing out that the club is beset with injuries.
“A big disappointment. We just had an off-day and we weren’t in it. It is what it is. We can’t really change the injury things. We have to do what we can on the pitch to change it. Today it didn’t matter who we played.”
Off days have become somewhat of a common occurrence at Old Trafford this season. To put things into perspective, this is the 13th such off-day we have had in the Premier League in 2023-24, a new low for the club.
“Everyone could have done better. I don’t know what the conclusion is for how it went. We weren’t good enough. We tried to do what we could but we were not good enough. We’ll take the blame as players.”
Eriksen did take collective responsibility for the players’ performances. While it is true that United could have done better, the failure for the players to realize it and yet not make a difference is concerning. With or without injuries, Palace are a side we should be beating with minimal fuss.
The lack of instructions from the sidelines was also noteworthy. Erik ten Hag looked like a deer caught in the headlights while Oliver Glasner was relentless in conveying instructions to his side. Ten Hag’s inability to adapt and improvise certainly appears to be taking to the field, with his players showing little might when the chips are down. The attitude of the players on the field certainty reflects the leadership off it.

While we still have the FA Cup final to look forward for, the lack of fight in our squad is rather concerning. Eriksen and Co certainly need to be performing at a higher level week in, week out. Whether they can make a statement this coming weekend against Arsenal remains to be seen. We, for one, will not get our hopes high.
