Manchester United in talks with Marseille to sell Mason Greenwood

Manchester United and Marseille are close to agreeing a deal for outcast Mason Greenwood

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are in talks with Marseille to sell Mason Greenwood this summer.

The English forward spent last season on loan in Spain with Getafe, scoring 10 goals and supplying six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions as his team finished 12th in the La Liga table. Getafe endured a poor finish to the season but the 22-year-old shone and won the club’s Player of the Year award., which has caught the attention of clubs such as Marseille and Lazio.

Mason Greenwood has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and had been due to return to the club for pre-season training this week. However, French club Marseille have shown the most interest in him and have tabled an official bid to Manchester United.

Fabrizio Romano claims on his official X account that talks are underway between both clubs, with Greenwood prioritising a move to Marseille this summer. The Red Devils are open to letting their academy graduate leave on loan with an obligation to buy, which includes a sell-on clause.

“Understand Olympique Marseille have sent formal bid to Manchester United for Mason Greenwood!” Romano tweeted from his official X account.

“Talks underway between the two clubs, Greenwood’s still OM main target with agreement getting closer.

“Man United open to loan with obligation to buy, sell-on clause included.”

In further positive developments, the Italian journalist states Man United will include a high sell-on clause in the deal—could be up to 40-50% of the future sale. Both clubs are getting closer to an agreement after an official bid was launched on Monday.

“More on Mason Greenwood. In any case, Man United will include big sell-on clause into the deal,” he added.

“It could be even up to 40/50% of the future sale, clubs are in talks about that.

“Olympique Marseille, getting closer after official bid sent earlier today.”

Greenwood has not played for Man United since being suspended by the club in January 2022 due to off-field issues. The one-cap England international supposedly has no future at Old Trafford and has taken to starting pre-season training away from the club’s base. The Red Devils are working hard behind the scenes to find the forward a new home—a permanent one—this summer as he is into the final 12 months of his contract.

In addition to Marseille and Lazio, Greenwood has plenty of suitors across Europe with the likes of Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Valencia being credited with an interest. However, it is Marseille who have intensified their efforts of landing the Man United outcast by launching a formal bid.
