Bruno Fernandes congratulates Tom Heaton on new Manchester United contract

Bruno Fernandes took to Instagram to congratulate veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton for signing a contract extension with Manchester United.

The United academy graduate, now 38, is in his second stint with the club ever since returning in 2021, having been on their books before between 2005 and 2010 as a senior pro.

Heaton has been at Old Trafford solely in a backup capacity, previously to David de Gea and now André Onana. He earned £45k per week at the club in the 2023/24 season and is now set to stay at United until at least the end of the 2024/25 season.

Across his two stints at United, Heaton has made just three appearances for the club.

Interestingly, Heaton is currently in Germany with the England national team for UEFA Euro 2024. He is part of the Three Lions setup as a training goalkeeper.

Heaton's Premier League record: 28 clean sheets from 116 appearances.

Not the worst call from the club

United are entering another turbulent season of transition with a new sporting ownership and a new sporting structure in the 2024/25 season.

In such a situation, finding stability wherever they can is paramount. That is exactly what Heaton offers: a safe pair of hands both on and off the pitch who can go between the sticks if the need arises while being an experienced, level-headed presence in the dressing room who knows the club both as a senior pro and an academy graduate.

All in all, keeping Heaton on for another season was an easy, no-harm call to make for the club.
