INEOS have decided to keep Erik ten Hag in charge of Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that the club interrupted his post-season holiday in Ibiza to tell him they wanted him to stay, as quoted while speaking on Dutch TV Channel NOS (h/t BBC).
The Dutch tactician’s position at Manchester United has been the subject of uncertainty following a woeful 2023/24 season. The Red Devils finished eighth in the table—their worst-ever finish in the Premier League era, leaving Erik ten Hag on thin ice.
Manchester United might have won the FA Cup by beating Manchester City 2-1 in the final in May, but it was deemed insufficient during INEOS’ end-of-the-season review. Yet, the new co-owners have decided to keep Erik ten Hag in place for the next season.
On Sunday, the 54-year-old manager explained that Manchester United officials travelled to Spain to meet with him and discuss extending his contract which expires in the summer of 2025.
“The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza,” Ten Hag said on Dutch TV channel NOS (h/t BBC).
“They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me.”
INEOS had spoken to potential replacements, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe holding conversations with former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel in Monaco, but they eventually opted to stick with Ten Hag.
“Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager,” he added.
“INEOS took their time. They are new in football, it’s normal to reflect on the season. It’s no secret that they talked with multiple candidates.”
Ten Hag and INEOS, who have taken control over the footballing operations since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority investment in the club, are in the process of agreeing a new deal.

INEOS’ decision signals a reverse in the assessment of Ten Hag’s future which has been up in the air for the last few months. it is clear Ratcliffe and his team were previously intent on sacking him, yet several factors ultimately convinced them the Dutchman was the right man for the job and should remain.
After the season-end review, the club were minded on making the correct decision over the managerial position, and we think they have made a wise decision to keep Ten Hag in charge.
