Manchester United have offered Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite a significant pay rise

According to a report from The Times, Manchester United have agreed personal terms with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite ahead of a possible summer swoop.

After a fantastic individual season with Everton, Jarrad Branthwaite, 21, has emerged as a priority defensive target for Manchester United. He has caught the eye with a series of fine displays at the heart of the Sean Dyche-managed side’s defence, helping the Toffees avoid relegation regardless of points deduction for breaching FFP rules.

The 21-year-old was also a member of Gareth Southgate’s 33-man England squad for the Euro 2024 but was dropped for the final 26-man squad that has travelled to Germany.

Off the back of being one of the rare bright sparks in another dismal campaign for Everton, it was unlucky for the centre-back to miss out on selection for England’s Euro 2024 squad.

The Times reports the Red Devils have agreed personal terms worth £150-160k wages with Jarrad Branthwaite. However, the club’s £43m bid for the defender is expected to be rejected by Everton. The Merseyside outfit, who face financial difficulties, value the Englishman closer to £70m.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag, who has been trusted by the INEOS to continue as manager for Man United, was forced to field different combinations in central defence last season owing to an injury crisis. Lisandro Martinez, our club’s first-choice centre-back, suffered another injury-ravaged campaign, limiting him to only 11 Premier League appearances.

Perhaps, Ten Hag wants cover for Martinez next season and is targeting a move for Branthwaite, who like the Argentinean World Cup winner is left-footed. However, the Toffees quoting £70m for their star defender with just one full Premier League season under his belt is way too much.

Man United must try their best to negotiate and agree a reasonable fee with Everton for Branthwaite. If Everton remain firm in their stance, we must move on to Branthwaite’s cheaper alternative targets, which include Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt and OGC Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo.
