Man United eye striker’s signing this summer
Manchester United have shortlisted three strikers as part of their squad rebuild this summer with Erik ten Hag’s future at the club safe following a board review, according to ESPN.
After Anthony Martial’s departure, the Red Devils are keen on adding fresh competition for Rasmus Hojlund after he struck 16 goals in his maiden season at the club.
While his numbers back the Danish international to play regularly in the starting eleven, he remains United’s only specialist striker which has made it an obligation for them to bring in a new face.
Benjamin Sesko was on the club’s radar for a significant period but he has decided to shun interest from overseas to continue for another season at RB Leipzig, where he will pen a new deal as well.
Ivan Toney, Jonathan Davids and Joshua Zirkzee are the trio of names appearing on Manchester United’s wish-list with a reasonably priced move on the cards for all of the players.
Zirkzee has a release clause worth only £34 million in his Bologna contract. David and Toney remain more realistic targets though, as they are both about to enter the final years of their contracts.
Lille’s asking price for David is yet to be determined but it is reported that Brentford will ask close to £50 million to part company with Toney.
If United’s recent track record with signings is a benchmark, they are likely to prioritise David or Zirkzee over Toney, as they are five and four years younger than the Englishman, respectively.
The Canadian and Dutch forwards could also be better suited to back-up role due to their age as Toney, who is in the prime years of his career could seek assurances regarding his minutes.
Given that they are not being sold within the Premier League, David and Zirkzee will also turn out to be cheaper options than Toney in terms of both, transfer fees and wages.
