Former Manchester United star Phil Jones reveals his ambition to become a coach
Phil Jones enjoyed a good career at Manchester United having spent 12 years at the club until he hung up his boots at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
It was an unfortunate end for the Premier League winner after an injury-ravaged career in which he made only five league starts in his final three seasons at Old Trafford. While he did have his moments, the Englishman’s time at Old Trafford was rather underwhelming.
Nevertheless, as one of the longest and most loyal servants of the clubs in recent years, Jones is a respected name within the Carrington offices and has already secured a role at the club.
He is the under 18 team’s coach and enjoyed success early on in his career in the hot seat having guided the youth side to a league and cup double in 2023/24.
Jones has now talked for the first time regarding his long-term plans after retirement, which include wanting to coach at the highest level in due course.
The Sun, quoted him saying the following in an interview with Ladbrokes 1-2-Free:
“I’ve matured as the years have gone on, and I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve done since retiring. You know, getting my A Licence in coaching, I’ve loved getting involved, I’ve helped out with the under-18s at Manchester United this year, and that’s been brilliant for me. I’m going to apply for my pro licence in the next few weeks, which hopefully I’ll be able to do soon. I definitely want to go into management in the next few years, for sure.”
Jones’ ambition to become a coach would see him join several of his former Manchester United teammates head down the managerial pathway at the end of their playing careers.
One of the most prominent names to walk the journey is one of his captains Wayne Rooney, who was Derby County’s and DC United’s coach before recently taking up the helm at Plymouth Argyle.
Having worked under some of the world’s best coaches, including Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, there is no reason why Jones cannot go on to achieve great things in the next phase of his career.
As such, he has done superbly well in his early days and is expected to continue his development with Manchester United’s youth ranks.
