Manchester United expected to lose transfer race for £34m Netherlands star to AC Milan

Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee has been linked with a move to Manchester United

According to a report from The Athletic, Manchester United are expected to lose summer transfer target Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee to AC Milan.

Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee is one of several strikers Manchester United are looking at this summer. The Netherlands international, 23, just starred for the Italian club during their Champions League qualification campaign. He registered 11 goals and four assists in 34 league appearances, as Bologna finished fifth in the Serie A table.

That has seemingly led to the Red Devils holding an interest in securing a deal for the talented Joshua Zirkzee, who has a £34 release clause in his contract. However, The Athletic reports AC Milan are poised to beat Manchester United to Zirkzee’s signature this summer.

It is no secret that Manchester United needs a quality goalscorer to reduce the burden on the young shoulders of Rasmus Hojlund. The Denmark international, 21, enjoyed a fine debut season in the Premier League, bagging 16 goals across all competitions.

The 21-year-old did suffer a couple of injuries along the way and looked exhausted at the fag end of the campaign, which prompted Erik ten Hag to start Bruno Fernandes as a false 9 and bring Hojlund off the bench in the final two Premier League games as well as the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Our club seems to have identified Zirkzee as a target to cover and compete with Hojlund next season. The Dutchman could help solve Man United’s goalscoring issues of 2023/24 while allowing Hojlund to develop without being put under a lot of pressure.

The 20-time English champions have the responsibility to make shrewd buys in the transfer market to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Zirkzee, with a £34 release clause in his contract, would be perfect for our club aiming to address several issues in the squad.

However, Milan currently leading the race for the 23-year-old’s signature is bad news for INEOS and Man United. If Zirkzee also favours a move to Milan, we must switch to other alternative targets quickly.
