Youssouf Fofana has decided to part ways with AS Monaco amid Manchester United interest
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United-linked midfielder Youssouf Fofana is heading towards AS Monaco exit.
Youssouf Fofana, 25, enjoyed a fantastic 2023/24 campaign with AS Monaco, supplying four goals and as many assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances. He was one of the club’s standout performers, helping AS Monaco finish second in the table and subsequently qualify for the Champions League—nine points behind champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who is a part of the France squad for the upcoming Euro 2024, has only one year left in his contract. Fabrizio Romano claims Youssouf Fofana will be ‘100% leaving Monaco this summer’ in pursuit of a fresh challenge.
“As reported yesterday, Youssouf Fofana is 100% leaving Monaco this summer. At the moment it’s a calm situation, nothing close or advanced with any club for Fofana from what I heard. He just wants to try something new and Monaco don’t want to lose him for free in 2025, so both parties are keen on an exit for this summer,” Romano wrote in his Daily Briefing column while exclusively speaking to CaughtOffside.
“Let’s see who will enter the race as it’s still early, but in my opinion, he’s really perfect for English football, I can see him doing well in the Premier League…last summer, he was on Manchester United’s list.”
Youssouf Fofana would certainly be an attractive option for a host of top clubs across Europe including Manchester United, who must bolster their options in the middle of the park after last season’s struggles.
The Red Devils made an approach to sign Fofana late in the 2023 summer transfer window. At that time, the 20-time English champions were looking to strike a loan deal for the midfielder but failure to agree terms with Monaco saw them end up with the loan signing of Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina.
The 25-year-old wants to leave the Louis II Stadium this summer and, as his contract expires in June 2025, Monaco are under pressure to sell Fofana now to avoid losing him for free. This provides a significant boost to Man United as we remain in the hunt for a new No.6 to potentially replace the ageing Casemiro, who is attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Fofana has the mix of technical skills and physicality to thrive in the Premier League. As the Ligue 1 side are in no position to demand a hefty fee for their star midfielder, we must be all over this deal.
