Man United likely to spend big this summer, says Kieran Maguire
According to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, Man United have the licence to spend big this summer.
The Red Devils have had to be prudent with their spending over the past few seasons owing to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The PSR mandate dictates that Premier League clubs cannot lose more than £105 million over a three-year period. United recorded a £115m loss during the 2021/22 season.
Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire explained why United won’t be worrying about PSR too much this summer.
“The 2024/25 could be a bit of a reset for Manchester United.
“The reason why the club has been so cautious in recent transfer windows, especially in the January window, is a lot to do with the large losses that the club racked up in 2021/22.
“However, such losses drop out of the three-year PSR equation this summer.
“This should give Manchester United much more wiggle room and a bigger budget to play with.
“This is combined with a new philosophy of shifting older and higher-earning players off the wage bill.“
Maguire speaking to Football Insider‘s Sean Fisher
United are also planning to let a fair few of their players go in the summer to ease up the wage bill and generate funds for player acquisition. Raphaël Varane and Anthony Martial are already on their way out, case in point.
Erik ten Hag‘s men conclude their 2023/24 campaign this Saturday as they face Man City in the FA Cup final.
United need to spend smart and not hard
The relaxing of PSR mandates is unquestionably good news for United going into a crucial summer.
However, that does not mean United can lower their guard. After all, it’s not that they haven’t spent money at all since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.
Over £1 billion was spent in player acquisitions and United are still trying to get out of the quagmire of mediocrity owing to their spectacularly bad football decisions during the Ed Woodward era.
