Don’t pat yourself for just making the final, says Roy Keane ahead of Man United’s FA Cup final rematch against Man City

Roy Keane has bestowed more quintessential wisdom upon Man United ahead of their FA Cup final game against Man City this Saturday.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast recently, the former United captain expressed his frustration over the manner in which United behaved after making the final last year and wants them to not repeat the mistake again.

“The noise coming out from United last year after they lost the final was that they were almost patting themselves on the back for getting to the final. Cut that crap out – you have to turn up and put in a performance. Don’t go down after 15 seconds – give yourself a bit of a chance. The game was over after that – City toyed with them, took their eye off for a little bit and gave them a little bit of encouragement.”

This year’s FA Cup final is a rematch of last year’s event, in which Man City came out 2-1 victorious on their way to securing a historic treble.

This is Erik ten Hag‘s third cup final with United in two years. While his future at Old Trafford lies in jeopardy, he at least has a chance to pick up a second trophy this weekend and become United’s second-most successful manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

You don’t say, Roy

Who doesn’t love Roy Keane for his colourful, profane commentary?

In all seriousness, though, if most of the United players’ behaviour after their FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City is anything to go by, Antony and Ten Hag might be the only ones patting themselves on the back for just making the final.

United are underdogs, heavy underdogs going into the final on Saturday. Of course, anything can happen on the day, but United coming out victorious over an ever-rampaging City will be nothing short of a miracle.
