Paulo Fonseca on Man United’s radar after impressive season with Lille
According to Calciomercato, as per Sky, both Bayern Munich and Manchester United are monitoring the situation of Paulo Fonseca.
The Portuguese coach has received plaudits this season for finishing fourth in Ligue 1 with Lille, thus securing at least a Champions League qualifiers berth for next season.
However, the 51-year-old’s contract runs out at the end of the ongoing season, making him a viable prospect for many clubs looking for a new manager this summer.
The former Roma coach has long been linked with AC Milan, who are gunning for a refresh ahead of next season after finishing a distant second to this season’s Serie A champions, rivals Inter Milan.
Bayern Munich have been having a hard time finding a replace for Thomas Tuchel, to the point that the German coach himself recently rejected the possibility of continuing at the Allianz Arena next season.
Manchester United, on the other hand, are expected to make a managerial change on the back of what has been one of the worst seasons in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
Current United manager Erik ten Hag will have one last shot at silverware later this week as he faces Man City in the FA Cup final. This could also be his last game as the United boss.
Fonseca won’t find immediate love at United
Everyone at United, both in and out the club, likes a shiny toy, so it’s unlikely that Paulo Fonseca would fill any Red Devil’s heart with optimism and excitement.
The Portuguese coach has unquestionably been praiseworthy during his time in France and has this season finished ahead of United’s sister club, Nice; it’s safe to say the INEOS group has had a close look at him.

The issue with United, however, remains the same: if they are going to go for a long-term managerial solution and dismiss Ten Hag, they would want to have a director of football in place. That is currently not the case, so any chances of United bringing a long-term prospect to Old Trafford remain tenuous at best.
