Man United prepared to offer £55 million for Jarrad Branthwaite with Raphaël Varane’s exit confirmed
According to a Daily Mail report, Manchester United are willing to offer as much as £55 million for Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite this summer.
The 21-year-old has played a key role at the back for Sean Dyche this season, helping the Toffees to secure their Premier League survival rather easily despite a hefty points deduction. He also received his first senior England call-up two months ago.
United, on the other hand, are keen to reinforce their defensive options given the injuries they have sustained this season, even more so now that it’s been confirmed that Raphaël Varane is set to leave the club at the end of this season.
Branthwaite arrived at Goodison Park four years ago from Carlisle United for a £1m fee.
Everton are understood to be reluctant to let the young Englishman go this summer, but an offer as good as the one mentioned above could tempt them to think otherwise especially given their financial woes in terms of compliance with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Price tag too high for Branthwaite right now
For a player who has just had his breakthrough season in the Premier League, a fee north of £50 million is too high a price.
Yes, United need defensive reinforcements, but they also need to learn from their past mistakes and have their own PSR worries to look after next season, because of which they are likely to be more keen to sell big rather than buy big this summer.

Branthwaite is a good, promising player who would improve United, but the price tag is too much for now. United are better off looking elsewhere and would probably get a better deal for someone like Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo given the INEOS link.
