Club icon and former skipper Roy Keane was at his grumpy best after Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday night.

The former Man United captain was in the Sky Sports box for the game at Old Trafford and couldn’t stop himself from going after the Red Devils after they dropped yet more points.

Keane said that United had lost all semblance of belief and, back to front, there was no one willing to do even the basics.

“Whatever bits of possession they had, the end product and lack of quality – you talk about the great teams United had over the years, the players they’ve had. That last half an hour, decision-making, nobody digging anybody out, making mistakes, falling over, not putting demands on each other.”

“That United team there… they’re so bad.”

“I was getting really frustrated, I couldn’t believe what I was watching, so poor. We have been repeating ourselves all year. Schoolboy stuff.”

Man United continue to barrel towards making this season their worst since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. They have two more league games remaining before they face Man City in the FA Cup final.

No rest for the wicked

Roy Keane is a hard man to please. Many teams before this Man United side have failed to put a smile on his face; many will continue to fail.

The argument about United failing to show any idea is an interesting one, because regardless of results that has been the takeaway of most fans and analysts this season: that it’s hard to understand exactly what Erik ten Hag is trying to go for.

And we’ll probably never truly find out, as the season reaches its last leg. Keane’s comments are the last thing any manager needs to worry about, but Ten Hag has had enough issues closer to home to make sure he fails to make a solid case for himself to continue at Old Trafford next season.

At this point, the lack of a sporting director presiding over hm might be the only thing that saves the Dutchman’s job, regardless of what happens in the FA Cup final.

And, given how Bayern Munich’s search for their next coach is going, he may find himself thanking his stars even more if he lands himself the Allianz Arena job next season, which is not impossible by any stretch of the imagination.
