England boss Gareth Southgate is now the ‘favourite’ to take over from Erik ten Hag at Manchester United
The 1-1 draw to Burnley doesn’t paint a nice picture for the long-term future of Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. The Dutchman continues to face a lot of pressure. Even though he’s the only manager to win a trophy for quite a while, there’s no cohesion in the style of play, and no repercussions for underperforming players.
Barney Ronay in his latest piece in The Guardian, names England boss Gareth Southgate as a favourite to take over from ETH at the end of the season. However, his contract with The Three Lions ends only in January 2025 (Transfermarkt).
However, through his at St. George’s Park, Southgate has had a lot of criticism to face, mainly due to the “lacklustre” style of football. Nevertheless, he is a manager who knows when to make the game the right intensity. He took England to the 2022 FIFA World Cup QF and also the finals of the 2020 UEFA Euros.
Southgate to Utd?
The idea of Southgate leaving the England setup for the Old Trafford dugout is definitely enticing. His experience in big tournaments could give the Reds a much-needed shot in the arm. But let’s not kid ourselves – making the jump from international to club management ain’t no walk in the park.
With all the talk swirling around about who’s gonna be the next gaffer at Manchester United, Southgate’s name’s front and centre in the chatter. But with his contract situation with England, it’s anyone’s guess if he’ll make the leap across the divide.
For Manchester United fans, the thought of Southgate taking charge is a mix of excitement and nerves. Sure, he’s done the business with England, but club football is a whole different ball game and he did not have the best of times with Middlesborough, his last club stint. Still, with United in need of a shake-up, Southgate could be just the ticket to get us back on track.
