Manchester United are ready to battle Manchester City and Bayern Munich to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong next summer
Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Manchester United want Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to bolster their midfield during the summer. De Jong suffered an ankle injury in last Sunday’s game against Real Madrid and had to be stretchered off crying.
The Dutch international has continued to be a crucial player for the Spanish giants this season despite their continuous struggle. Barcelona are currently second in the La Liga, 11 points behind Real and they have crashed out of the Champions League.
De Jong has faced a recurring issue with an ankle injury throughout this season, facing the sideline twice with that problem. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old has been a first-team regular under Xavi and played in several different positions, showcasing his impressive versatility.
De Jong has played as a number-eight and a number-six in the central midfield and also as the centre-back. The 26-year-old is an important creative force and is responsible for dictating the tempo of the team from the central area.
He has matured further with age, using his positioning and game intelligence to influence matches in each of the phases. De Jong has made 30 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions, contributing with two goals this season.
Fichajes reported that United, Man City and Bayern are planning to recruit De Jong and bolster their midfield next summer. The report values the Dutchman at least 70 million euros by the Spanish giant.
Barcelona’s dysfunctional finances could force them to sell De Jong for that price despite his importance to the team. The Red Devils have struggled with consistency and cohesiveness in both the defensive and the offensive phases throughout this season.
They are currently seventh in the Premier League table, 10 points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. United targeted a top-four finish during the latter half of the season after their dreadful start to the campaign.
They signed Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat during the summer but both players have failed to make any positive impact. Furthermore, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have struggled to keep up with the pace of the Premier League.
