Manchester United could lose out on summer target to Premier League rivals Liverpool
As reported by The Mirror (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United could lose out on their summer target, Joao Gomes to Premier League rivals Liverpool. The 23-year-old is believed to be a replacement for Casemiro.
The Red Devils are expected to move on from the former Real Madrid man this season. So, if they’re successful in signing Gomes, their midfield next season will consist of him and Kobbie Mainoo. However, his words from last season are a bad indication for the Red Devils. Let’s have a look. (h/t Manchester Evening News)
“Liverpool are a team I would [like to] play for. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”
His comments represent two separate problems for the Red Devils. First, Gomes automatically prefers Liverpool over Manchester United. Second, the Brazilian wants to play in the Champions League which is his biggest dream.
Now the Old Trafford squad are currently not on pace to play in the UCL next season. On the other hand, the Reds will be making it with ease. This could be a deciding factor for Gomes.
However, Manchester United still have a chance to flip the script. If they manage to pull off a win in every game to close out this season, then we could see them in Europe next year.
But the Red Devils being consistent is a rare sight, or at least it has been during Erik ten Hag’s second season at the helm. Jurgen Klopp departing Liverpool next season could also play a part in Gomes’ future decision.
