Amad Diallo speaks highly of the support he received from Manchester United ‘leader’ Lisandro Martinez
Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has spoken out highly about the support he received from ‘leader’ Lisandro Martinez back when he was injured, speaking in an interview as quoted by Manchester Evening News.
Diallo had a frustrating few months since the pre-season. The 21-year-old Red Devils winger picked up an injury at the wrong time. The Ivory Coast forward was impressive in the pre-season and looked like he had a shot under Erik ten Hag.
The young forward missed 126 days of action and 22 games for the Red Devils, according to Transfermarkt. Considering the tumultuous situations of Antony and Jadon Sancho throughout the first few months of the season, Amad Diallo might have received a lot of game time.
The interesting part about his injury though is his revelations of how an already injured Lisandro Martinez helped him get through times. Diallo was visibly grateful for the support he received from a player he called a ‘leader’.
Speaking about the situation, here is what Diallo had to say about the former Ajax man.
“Lisandro is a fantastic person. He’s more than a player to me. He’s a leader. When I got injured, he was injured too, so he really helped me. He spoke to me a lot and told me not to worry about the injury, and the main thing was to stay positive and work hard to get back into the team, so I did what he and everyone else said.”
No one at Old Trafford has had a tougher time than Martinez. The talented centre-back was flying high in his first season in England and quickly established himself as one of the best in his position in the league. Let’s not forget the World Cup he won last year which was just the icing on the cake.
He was brought back down to earth against Sevilla in the Europa League last season when the defender collapsed off the ball. Ever since he has made two unsuccessful returns back from injury and is set to spend another couple of months on the sideline.
Despite going through such a hard ordeal himself, the fact that Martinez took the time out to help Diallo with injury just shows the kind of player the Argentine is. It also shows how strong the 26-year-old is mentally.
