Man United have ‘very high chance’ of signing Denzel Dumfries
Manchester United have a real chance at signing Inter Milan’s Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries. The 27-year-old has yet to enter discussions to extend his contract at Nerazzurri and apparently, the chances of that are very slim.
According to FC Inter News via Manchester Evening News, the biggest obstacle is the wage demands. While the club remain adamant on €4m, the player’s entourage push for another extra million euros which is tough for Inter in the face of the removal of the Growth Decree in Italy alongside their other financial issues.
The Growth Decree allowed clubs in Serie A to save taxes on salaries to players from outside Italy, but all new negotiations from this point onward will see the Decree ceasing to exist, which means higher rates of tax for Italian clubs. Calcio was in bad shape already, and this makes it much more tough for clubs to sustain.
Nevertheless, who are Man United to complain? The availability of world-class talent from Italian clubs comes as a welcome for all other clubs, including the Red Devils who could do with the services of a right-back.
Denzel to the Red Devils?
Dumfries is extremely versatile as he can feature as a wing-back in a back three, a traditional right-back and can also play as a right midfielder; all while excelling at both aspects of the game. Manchester United have Spiderman at right-back but the venom of attacking football from the fullbacks is proving to be too tough of an ask for someone like Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Dumfries has nine goals and 18 assists in 114 appearances across all competitions for Inter. 94 pth for npxG + xAG and 85 pth for assists vs fullbacks is a testament to the attacking aspect of his gameplay.

We will have more clarity on this front as the time goes on in the transfer window, but best be assured that Erik ten Hag would know his compatriots and former players well. The success of Antony and Tyrell Malacia is a great great great great testament to that. Let’s see if United actually go on to pursue Dumfries.
