Manchester United hold formal talks to sign Leny Yoro
According to French outlet Le10Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have held formal talks for LOSC Lille defender Leny Yoro in a move that could significantly bolster their defensive options for the coming seasons.
United are in advanced discussions for Yoro, with Lille demanding a substantial fee of around €90 million (£78 million) for the French youngster. Yoro, despite his young age, has rapidly emerged as one of the most promising defenders in European football.
His performances at Lille have not only been eye-catching but also remarkably consistent, a rare trait for a player in his teenage years. This season, Yoro has featured 22 times for Lille, contributing three goals, an impressive tally for a central defender.
His ability to transition from age-group football to the first team seamlessly at Lille has attracted the attention of several top clubs, including Manchester United and Liverpool.
Manchester United’s interest in Yoro is understood to be driven by the uncertainties surrounding the long-term futures of their current central defensive options, Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire. Varane’s potential departure from Old Trafford, possibly in the upcoming summer transfer window, necessitates the acquisition of a reliable right-footed centre-back.
However, the pursuit of Yoro is not without its challenges. Manchester United face stiff competition from Liverpool, who are also in the market for a young centre-back, given the contractual situation of Joel Matip and the ageing Virgil van Dijk.
The €90 million price tag set by Lille poses a significant challenge for both Premier League clubs. While neither Manchester United nor Liverpool have shied away from big-money signings in the past, the need for strategic investments in other areas might influence their willingness to meet Lille’s valuation of Yoro.

The acquisition of Yoro would represent a significant investment in the future for Manchester United.
