Who is Manchester United’s 19-year-old Willy Kambwala? More about the defender who started against West Ham United

Willy Kambwala started at centre-back for Manchester United’s game against West Ham. It’s an odd choice when you consider the fact that this was a must-win game for the Dutchman.

Why would Erik Ten Hag decide that Willy Kambwala’s debut has to be made during a must-win game? It almost feels like the Dutchman is trying to lose games now.

Being his first game, the 19-year-old looked extremely uncomfortable on the pitch. For most fans, it was like witnessing a fish out of water. It’s a despicable squad selection call by Ten Hag.

Kambwala used to be the U-17 captain for the France national team. He has been training with the Manchester United first squad for a couple of seasons now. Moreover, the Frenchman even made it onto the bench for the Red Devils’ trip to Anfield.

While it was refreshing to see him trust a 19-year-old, this was surely not the time. Ten Hag paid dearly for this poor judgment call after West Ham managed to find the back of the net twice. The Hammers scored two within seven minutes.

Kambwala looked comfortable early on but had no real impact on the game. His defensive qualities were subpar. The Frenchman did not even manage to win a single duel against the West Ham players (fot.mob).

Now, the team is sitting at eighth on the Premier League table. It’s not entirely Kambwala’s fault. But, the result could have been different if there was someone else playing at centre-back.

A poor choice that led to even poorer results. Something that can come back to be a thorn in the Dutchman’s side.
